In March this year Facebook passed out Google as the most visited web site in the US !  This is a landmark statistic and shows the importance that now needs to be put in 'Social Media' when doing business online. Looking at the statistics on Alexa you can see that this may have been a 'spike', but get the comparison report between Google, Facebook and YouTube (in the Traffic Stats tab) and you will see that while Google and YouTube are little more than stable for people using the site per day, Facebook is steadily increasing.

 

More importantly from a marketing perspective, Facebook has a much higher 'time on site' figure than Google and even YouTube, meaning the site gets much more 'eyeball' time from its users.

Aside from all the facts and figures, there is the networking potential of these websites. Networking has always been an important part of doing business but the big difference from the traditional methods is that online social networking offers huge potential to extend a network to a large number of members in a relatively short period. It has low costs too!

 

Communication with the people in the network can be maintained with very little effort and, if done properly, is regarded as permission marketing and is of value to the prospective customer rather than being shoved down their throats.

 

What does all this mean for your business ?  You still need to know your customer, what your customer wants and make them an offer that will delight them; these things have not changed. What has changed is the number and the power of communications channels now available to you. You need to get the most out of them, design your marketing strategy with them in mind - or your competition will !
